Chiltern Railways has increased the availability of free Passenger Wi-Fi so that it now covers all trains that pass through North Oxfordshire.
Passengers on trains from Banbury, Bicester North and Bicester Village can now access the Icomera Wi-Fi as one of a series of recent planned upgrades. The project was funded by the Department for Transport.
Dave Penney, managing director of Chiltern Railways, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer free Wi-Fi to our customers on all of our trains. We know how important it is to our passengers to be able to get things done whilst on the move. An additional 1,400 services now have the facility, providing more opportunity for customers to make their time on the train more productive.”
In July 2016 Chiltern launched the integrated station and train Wi-Fi enabling customers to be online on arrival at the station and be seamlessly connected as they board their train.
For 2017, Chiltern plans to start a project with the mobile network operator EE, to decrease so-called “not spots” across current routes, with the possibility of customers having Wi-Fi coverage in tunnels.
Victoria Prentis the MP for Banbury said: “It is brilliant news that Chiltern can now offer its passengers Wi-Fi access on any train journey they take.
“As a regular commuter myself, Internet access really makes such a difference on the journey to and from work. I am particularly grateful to the Department for Transport for their assistance in making the rollout possible.”
