Icomera celebrates its 25th anniversary this month! To mark the milestone, let’s look at an evolution defined by groundbreaking industry firsts and a continued passion for improving journeys on public transportation.

In July 1999, Mats Karlsson founded Icomera along with three fellow students he met while studying. Using their patented technology, they sought to deliver the fastest, most reliable connection possible to moving vehicles. In 2003, a significant leap was taken when Icomera deployed the rail-industry’s very first commercial onboard passenger Wi-Fi service for Swedish rail operator SJ, turning travel time into productive time

“Throughout the last quarter of a century we’ve seen first-hand how vital onboard connectivity is for transport operators, their passengers, and systems”, explains Mats. “And the very same spirit of innovation we’ve had since the company started remains at the heart of what we do today.”

The Icomera team now totals more than 300 employees globally, all of whom are dedicated to delivering the best service, and who remain the bedrock from which we can provide the best solutions.

From launching the world’s first rail-certified 5G router to harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, announcing the first Wi-Fi 7 access point purpose-built for public transportation to integrating satellite technology as part of the connectivity mix, we’re constantly exploring new ways to accelerate the Rail industry’s digital transition.

Today, taking advantage of the very latest technologies, we’re giving transport operators the tools they need, to not only meet but exceed their ever-increasing connectivity demands.

Moreover, our vision for smarter, safer, more attractive public transportation is supported by 90,000 experts in the wider Equans group. We work alongside industries and local authorities to ensure that public transport plays a significant role in modern, connected, sustainable living.

Catherine Chardon, Icomera’s Chief Executive Officer: “As Icomera steps proudly into its next chapter, our customer focus and commitment to excellence continues to drive our mission, connecting people and places like never before.”

Here’s to the next 25 years of pioneering advancements which empower the transformation to a greener, more sustainable future.
