Metrolinx has launched the first GO Transit buses and trains equipped with Icomera’s centralized connectivity network platform. The solution will allow Metrolinx’s passengers to work while they travel, stay connected on social media, and enjoy a wide variety of curated media content, making their trips more productive and entertaining than ever before.
In addition, Icomera’s powerful system can be leveraged to deliver a range of other passenger, operational, and safety & security applications, redefining travel in a COVID-19 era. ENGIE Solutions, through its subsidiary Icomera, is the world’s leading provider of wireless Internet connectivity for public transport. This project to enhance the experience for Metrolinx’s passengers is fully in line with ENGIE Solutions’ objective to reinvent living environments for a more virtuous and sustainable world.
Last year, Metrolinx, the transportation authority serving the Province of Ontario, selected Icomera Canada to deploy its powerful connectivity solutions aboard GO Transit’s fleet of vehicles operating in the Greater Toronto Area. Icomera continued working safely and responsibly on the installation throughout the COVID-19 lockdown, recognizing the importance of keeping the ambitious project on track, while providing continuous public transportation services for the region’s frontline workers and citizens.
The rollout is being managed locally by Icomera’s Canada office in conjunction with its parent company, ENGIE Solutions, a multi-national green energy and mobility player. In the year since the partnership was announced, installation has already been completed on GO Transit’s bus fleet and approximately 50% of its trains.
Magnus Friberg, Icomera’s CEO, said: “Icomera is working with Metrolinx and GO Transit to provide passengers with ever more rewarding and enjoyable journeys. This project provides another great step forward in Icomera’s mission to make public transport a more attractive option for passengers, and our shared goal with ENGIE Solutions to lead the way in the transition to a carbon-neutral world.”
Phil Verster, Metrolinx’s President and CEO, commented: “With hundreds of entertainment options to choose from in addition to Wi-Fi, we are making the onboard experience even more convenient and enjoyable for customers. We are so excited to bring this Wi-Fi experience to our customers on our buses and trains in partnership with Icomera.”
